How Did Tolis Voskopoulos Die?

Tolis Voskopoulos, a great Greek popular singer, composer, and actor who had a remarkable career in both music and movies, passed away on Monday in Athens at the age of 80.


Voskopoulos, a modern Greek folk music artist, died of heart arrest Monday in an Athens hospital, a few days shy of his 81st birthday and several weeks after being hospitalized with respiratory problems, according to Greek media.

Who Was Tolis Voskopoulos?

Apostolos "Tolis" Voskopoulos was a modern Greek music legend. He has appeared in a number of films and performed at the Athens Theatre.


Voskopoulos was born on July 26, 1940, in Greece's principal port city of Piraeus, to parents who were immigrants from Asia Minor. He was the youngest of 12 children and the only male. He began his acting career when he was 18 years old, on stage for the first time in 1953, and in 1963, he made his film debut.


The 1968 song "Agonia," composed by Giorgos Zambetas, was considered his first significant musical triumph, selling more than 300,000 copies, a record-breaking figure for Greek music at the time.


Over the next few decades, he continued to produce tremendous successes, earning the nickname "prince" from his millions of followers. In February 2020, he had his final theatrical performance, singing with his daughter Maria to commemorate his 60-year career.


Voskopoulos married four times throughout his life. Angela Gerekou, his wife and current head of the Greek Tourist Organization, and their daughter Maria Voskopoulou survive him.
