On Monday morning, former KwaZulu-Natal premier and Eskom chair Dr. Ben Ngubane died of Covid-19 complications.
Who Was Ben Ngubane?
Ben Ngubane was born 22 October 1941 in Camperdown, KwaZulu-Natal on Baldwin Sipho "Ben" Ngubane was a politician from South Africa. He held multiple positions in the post-apartheid government of the country. In particular, he has been Premier of KwaZulu-Natal and minister of Arts, Culture from 1994 until 31 August 1996 and from February 1999 until April 2004.
Ngubane became Minister of Health in the KwaZulu administration in 1991, a position he maintained until 1994. Ngubane was a member of the CODESA working group on constitutional concepts and constitution-making in 1992. In 1993, he represented the Inkatha Freedom Party in negotiations with the African National Congress.
In 2004, he was named Ambassador to Japan, where he served until 2008. For his services "to the growth of Japan-South Africa science and technology cooperation," he was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun in 2010.
