How Did Kristen Richards Die?
Kristen Richards, Hon. AIA, the editor, writer, and photographer, died of cancer yesterday at the age of 69. She was the editor-in-chief and co-founder of ArchNewsNow.com (ANN),
which started in 2002 and was one of the architecture profession's first webzines and e-newsletters covering architectural, planning, and design news.
From 2003 to 2016, she was the editor-in-chief of Oculus, the quarterly journal of The American Institute of Architects New York. She spent two years as editor-in-chief of DesignArchitecture.com,
one of the first online periodicals for the AEC industry, prior to starting ANN. Richards worked for national and international design and business periodicals as a freelance journalist and photographer.

“Kristen Richards had a special place in the small circle of dedicated architectural journalists,” says AIA executive vice president and chief executive officer Robert Ivy, FAIA. “Always present and compassionate,
she led a front-row-center existence as the editor of Oculus and the founder of ArchNewsNow, recording the developing richness of architecture in New York and around the world.”
Richards was a continuous presence in New York's architecture and design community, praising architects and buildings while also promoting other architecture media through ANN, which had roughly 16,000 subscribers worldwide at its peak.
Kristen was a legend in our field and a force to be reckoned with. She developed the excellent [ANN] as a one-woman operation, which became vital daily reading for many of us as we sought to stay on top of local and global design news,” says Benjamin Prosky, Assoc.
AIA, executive director of AIANY and the Center for Architecture. “Under her direction, Oculus grew from a newsletter to a more robust design publication that serves as a vital megaphone for our community.
She adored the Center for Architecture and looked forward to our programs, exhibits, and social events. She will be sorely missed by the architecture community in New York City and beyond.
