Who Was Rodney Alcala?
Rodney James Alcala was born on August 23, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.
Rodney James Alcala was an American serial killer and rapist who was sentenced to death in California for five murders committed there between 1977 and 1979 and received an additional sentence of 25 years to life in New York after pleading guilty to two homicides committed there in 1971 and 1977. Alcala's true number of victims is unknown, but it could be significantly higher.
Alcala amassed a collection of over 1,000 images of women, adolescent girls, and boys, many of whom were photographed in sexually explicit situations. He was charged in 2016 with the 1977 murder of a lady who appeared in one of his photographs. Alcala is known to have assaulted at least one other photographic subject, and authorities believe there may be more rape or murder victims.
Prosecutors said Alcala "toyed" with his victims, strangling them until they passed out, then waiting until they regained consciousness, sometimes repeating the process multiple times before killing them. Alcala has been compared to Ted Bundy by one police investigator, who described him as "a killing machine."
