Who Was Harmoko?
Harmoko was born on 7 February 1939 in Kertosono, Nganjuk, East Java, Dutch East Indies.
Harmoko began working as a journalist with Merdeka weekly news magazine in 1960 after attending journalism school in Jakarta. He worked for a number of newspapers until becoming editor of the Jakarta dailies Pos Kota and Terbit in 1970. He was elected to the Press Council and the Film Censorship Board in 1975.
Harmoko was elected to the Indonesian legislature, the People's Consultative Assembly, in 1977. From 1983 until 1997, he served as information minister in three successive Suharto New Order administrations (Fourth Development Cabinet, Fifth Development Cabinet, and Sixth Development Cabinet), during which time his name was rumored to be an abbreviation for hari-hari omong kosong (talking nonsense every day).
Harmoko utilized his power to enlarge the press publication enterprise permit's scope (SIUPP). When a publishing business withdrew the SIUPP, it could no longer lawfully operate, and it could also be used to effectively ban individual publications.
After the weekly news magazine Tempo published a story critical of Research and Technology Minister B. J. Habibie's purchase of 39 East German warships, the magazine's SIUPP was cancelled on June 21, 1994, and it halted publication. Detik and Editor, two other news periodicals, were both banned at the same time.
