Robert Downey Sr., the actor and filmmaker father of Robert Jr., passed away at the age of 85.
According to the Sun, Downey Sr. died in his sleep at his New York City residence on Wednesday. Last month, he celebrated his 85th birthday.
Downey Sr., who was best remembered for his roles in "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," and "To Live and Die in LA," had been battling Parkinson's disease for more than five years.
On Wednesday, Downey Jr., 56, paid tribute to his father, describing him as a "maverick."
“Rest in peace, Bob D. Sr., 1936-2021... “Last night, after years of battling Parkinson's disease, dad died away quietly in his sleep,” he wrote. “He was a true outlaw filmmaker who stayed astonishingly upbeat throughout his career.
My stepmother calculated that they had been blissfully married for slightly over 2000 years. Rosemary Rogers (Rosemary Rogers) Downey, you are a saint, and we are thinking about you and praying for you.”

Robert John Downey Sr. was born on June 24, 1936, in New York City, U.S.
Robert John Downey Sr. was an American actor, director, producer, writer, and cinematographer. He was the father of actor Robert Downey Jr. He is most known for writing and directing the underground film Putney Swope, a satire of the New York advertising scene on Madison Avenue.
Downey Srfilms .'s of the 1960s, according to cinema researcher Wheeler Winston Dixon, were "strictly no-holds-barred affairs, with limited budgets and outrageous satire, effectively pushing forward the countercultural agenda of the day.
Robert John Downey Sr. was born in Manhattan, New York City, as the son of model Elizabeth (née McLauchlan) and motel and restaurant manager Robert Elias Sr. His paternal grandparents were Lithuanian Jews, while his mother was part Irish, half Hungarian Jewish.
Downey was born Robert Elias Jr. and later changed his surname to James Downey when he tried to enlist in the US Army but he was too young.
