Who Was Geoff Makhubo?
Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo was born on 8 February 1968Soweto, Transvaal Province, South Africa.
Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo was a South African politician who served as Mayor of Johannesburg from December 2019 to July 2021, when he died of COVID-19. He was the party's regional chair and a member of the African National Congress. He was the MMC (Member of the Mayoral Committee) for Finance during Parks Tau's administration.
Makhubo was born in the former Transvaal Province's Soweto in 1968. In 1990, he earned a BComm from the University of the Witwatersrand. He completed a number of Advanced Management courses.
Makhubo graduated from Wits Business School's Management Advancement Programme (MAP) in 1997. He also has a diploma in leadership in local government from the University of Cape Town. He was studying for a master's degree at Wits University when he died in 2021.
In his youth, Makhubo was the chairperson of the African National Congress Youth League. During Parks Tau's mayoralty, he was the Johannesburg MMC for Finance. When Tau was mayor, he also served as the Leader of Executive Business in Council and the Chairperson of the Governance Cluster. Makhubo was Co-President of the Metropolis Global Fund for City Development (FMDV).
He was a top leader in the Greater Johannesburg Region of the African National Congress. Before becoming the regional chairman in July 2018, he served as the regional treasurer. After Parks Tau resigned from the city council in May 2019, he was appointed as the ANC's caucus leader.

Just in: Johannesburg Executive Mayor #GeoffMakhubo has passed on. Makhubo had been recently hospitalised due to COVID-19 complications.
