Who Was Esther Béjarano?
Esther Béjarano was born on 15 December 1924. Esther Béjarano was an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor. Along with Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, she was a member of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra.
Béjarano was born Esther Löwy in Saarlouis, the daughter of a Jewish municipality's head cantor. Esther learned to play the piano after her father pushed her to pursue her love of music. She had to leave her parents' house at the age of 15 in order to undertake an unsuccessful attempt to escape to Palestine. She worked at a camp in Landwerk Neuendorf, near Fürstenwalde/Spree, for two years.
Everyone in the camp was transferred to Auschwitz concentration camp on April 20, 1943. She had to haul stones until she was accepted into the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra, where she played the accordion. The orchestra's job was to provide music for the gangs' daily march past the camp gate. She went to Palestine after the war on September 15, 1945, then returned to Germany with her husband and two children in 1960.
