Who Was Dolores Claman?
Dolores Olga Claman was a Canadian pianist and composer. She is best known for writing "The Hockey Theme," the 1968 theme song for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) Hockey Night In Canada show, which is considered the country's unofficial second national anthem. She's also recognized for the song "A Place to Stand," which was used to accompany the film of the same name in the Expo 67 Ontario pavilion in Montreal. This is considered the unofficial provincial anthem of Ontario.
Claman was born on July 6, 1927, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Claman's mother was an opera singer, and she learned to play the piano in her hometown. She attended the University of Southern California to study music and acting after graduating from high school at the age of 16.
With the goal of becoming a concert pianist, she received a fellowship to study at the Juilliard School. There, she studied piano with Rosina Lhévinne and Eduard Steuermann, as well as composition with Vittorio Giannini and Bernard Wagenaar. Claman's interest in jazz music piqued, therefore she decided to pursue a career in composition instead. She moved to London in 1953 after graduation.
