How Did Onsi Sawiris Die?

Onsi Sawiris, the patriarch of a family of millionaire industrialists who founded the Orascom umbrella of international corporations, has died. He was 90 years old.

Who Was Onsi Sawiris?

Sawiris was born on August 14, 1930, and graduated from Cairo University with a bachelor's degree in agriculture in 1950. The industrialist first established "Onsi and Lamei," a company that specialized in road construction and canal digging.


However, the corporation was partially nationalized in 1961 before becoming entirely nationalized later. Sawiris, on the other hand, had chaired the organization for five years before leaving to Libya in 1966, where he also worked in the building industry.


He returned to Egypt a decade later, founded Orascom for Constructions and Trade in 1976. The name was eventually changed to Orascom for Construction Industries, and the company's investment portfolio grew to include tourism, hospitality, computing, and cell phone networks in the 1980s and 1990s.


Sawiris' wealth reached $993.8 million in 2018-2019, according to revised data provided on the Forbes website, as he was pulled from the billionaire's list.

 

Two of his children, on the other hand, are still on the list. Nassef, 60, is one of them, with a net worth of $9.2 billion. The other is Naguib, who has a net worth of $3.1 billion. Samih, the third son, has an estimated net worth of $850 million.
