Who Was Howard Schnellenberger?
Howard Leslie Schnellenberger was a long-serving professional and college football coach in the United States. He was a head coach for the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League and the University of Miami, University of Oklahoma, University of Louisville, and Florida Atlantic University in college. In 1983, he led Miami to a national championship. He was born on March 16, 1934, in Saint Meinrad, Indiana.
Schnellenberger has served as an assistant coach at the collegiate and professional levels, including as a member of the unbeaten 1972 Miami Dolphins coaching team. In 1961, he is also remembered for recruiting Joe Namath to Alabama for Bear Bryant.
